It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Al. Reflecting on such great memories, Al was our neighbour and dear friend to my parents. Ahhh the stories that he and my father would regale. Our sincere sympathy from all of the Roach family, prayers and love go to Isabelle and all of the Marshall family.

To the family of Mr. Marshall please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. I met Insp. Marshall in 1971 when I was working as an RCMP Civilian Member at the Headquarters building corner of Hollis and George Street in the Maritime Crime Index Section (MCIS). I was a young 21 year old Acadian Cape Bretoner who had left a small fishing community for the "Big" city of Halifax. Insp. Marshall worked upstairs and had to walk by our department every time he entered the building and also the nature of his responsibilities required he visit MCIS. He always took the time to say hi, exchange a few pleasantries and the odd joke. On March 2nd of 1972 I had a change of status from Civilian member to regular member and I went to Regina for training graduation on September 7th. At graduation I received a congratulatory "Telex" message from Insp. Marshall congratulating me. I was deeply touched that he had taken the time to write to me. In fact I still have the message he sent me and think of him each time I see it. Although I did not get to know him well, I knew enough to know that he was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. The fact that an Insp. would sent a message to a 3rd class constable demonstrated he was a good man,.

Have known Al for many decades and for the past 20 plus years there was always at least one e mail per week in my in box. Always a TGIF report. On top of that he was addicted to radio and he monitored Amateur Radio transmissions from the deep south and each time I signed off, within minutes there was an e mail report confirming he had been listening.
A perfect example of one whose glass was always half full. In recent years (like the rest of us his peers) he tumbled occasionally which always generated praise for the care of his family...Brian, Susan, Peter and especially HIS RESIDENT NURSE Isabelle.
A memory like a computer, a great writer (especially about his Northern adventures, and with a continuing supply of inside information from our old organization. He will long remembered and missed.
Sincere sympathy to all the family

I met Al when posted to HQ in 1981. His office was across from mine and we shared stories from time to time. I too attended Westdale HS in Hamilton so that was another connection. He was a wonderful story-teller and his experience meeting the Polar Bear was the best.
My sincere condolences,
Gary
