Nearly 55 years have passed since I knew John but I am enormously saddened by the news of his death.
When we met he was frying up, outdoors under the palm trees, a delicious mix of boiled rice and a tin of tuna. We were fellow UK VSOs, aged 19 and 18, in the Central District of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands on a community education project in a remote part of the island (at the heart of the Moro independence movement). John was a little older, more worldly-wise, and inevitably something of an older brother. Adding to the obit anecdotes, I remember we were invited to shoot alligators from a canoe at night - and very keen to do so (“. . . you shine a torch in their eyes then spear them. . .”). The skins are salted and sold to the Chinese traders who came by boat to the village from time to time. Fortunately, perhaps, this adventure, or possible misadventure, didn’t happen.
John had a great sense of fun and adventure but was always very serious about ensuring the success of the project - which it was. I see that the documents we subsequently wrote are with the papers of J.L.O. Tedder in the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau accommodated in the Australian National University in Canberra. Murray Chapman’s (now online) dissertation “A Population Study in South Guadalcanal” (1967) also refers to them. It will be great to look them up one day. RIP, John.

We are very sad to learn of the death of John. When we lived in Whitley Bay (near Newcastle upon Tyne) John was the Vicar of St Mary's Church and his "vicarship" was very much appreciated by our family. He was a complete "one off" with the ability to communicate with everyone. He was instrumental in David being confirmed at the same time as our daughter and we always enjoyed attending church when John was in charge. He was by no means a "typical" vicar but this was one of his many strengths and made him all the more approachable. Many years have passed since John was at Whitley Bay but he was someone that we have never forgotten.
We send our condolences to his wife and family who hopefully can remember with love the remarkable man that he was.

I was sad to hear of John's death and my prayers are with you, his family.
John brought me into the church as I was one of his adult confirmation group, confirmed the same year as James. I remember James knocking on the door one night after yet another burst of raucous laughter, wanting to know why our confirmation class was obviously much more fun than his!
John was a lovely man with a wicked sense of humour, a very human vicar never happier than at the heart of his family.
He will be sorely missed by the many people whose lives he touched and left for the better.
God bless RIP John.
Regards
Cheryl

To Pauline and family - our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. Ron remembers numerous interesting conversations with John at the pub, he will miss these conversations. For me, Rev. John s sermons at St. Luke's always gave one food for thought.
