Macaskill, Peter, M - Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown, Annapolis County - On June 6, 2013, Peter went to be with his Lord just 20 days short of his 65th wedding anniversary. Peter and Joyce were married in Montreal and went immediately to serve with the United Church in Carmanville, Newfoundland where they began their fondness for the people and the island. After 2 years, a call came from the St. Anthony United Church; here, Peter learned his navigation skills with the trusty mission boat Chalmers and his compass. Also, in St. Anthony, their three children where born, Wynne, Joanne and Donald. Peter loved visiting the people along the northern coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. After 13 years in Northern NL the family moved to Quebec to serve the United Churches around Bedford and Chomedey. Peter loved walking, being outdoors and camping holidays. Canoeing on Lake Eden, Vermont, with the loons was always a special part of those days. Peter took refresher courses for several summers at Regent College, B.C., which allowed the family to enjoy camping coast to coast. He was always involved with Boy Scouts and Church youth groups. He loved reading, skiing and skating but never became adept at kitchen duties! Above all else, Peter humbly lived out his faith in obedience to His Lord, and in the way he treated each person with compassion and love while encouraging all in their spiritual journey. This support included membership in I.V.C.F. at McGill University and chaplaincy and Concordia University in Montreal. After retirement, Peter and Joyce became active members of First Christian Reformed Church, Montreal where they made lasting friendships; they became part of a travel group which was formed within the congregation, exploring Holland and parts of Europe. In 2000, they moved to Halifax where a new church family at All Nations Church embraced and supported them. Peter is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Wynne and Joanne; his four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son in 1982. The family is so grateful for the loving care and kindness of the staff at Mountain Lea Lodge, both to Peter and the family. No detail seemed too difficult but every attention was given with smiles and cheerfulness. We have been most impressed and thankful. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kaulbach Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Bridgetown. A service of remembrance will be held at All Nations Christian Reformed Church, 2535 Robie Street at Charles, Halifax, at 4 pm Friday, June 14, 2013, with the Rev. David Vroege officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be sent to Mountain Lea Lodge 170 Church Street, Bridgetown, N.S. B0S 1C0 for their special care unit.
