Ray Sheldon was a unique scientist who contributed greatly to a most fundamental understanding of the biological structures within oceans, reducing it to understandable terms via the globally recognized "Sheldon Biomass Spectrum"; regeneration rates, energy transfer, species replacement from bacteria to whales. Few can reduce seemingly complex systems to such terms. As a scientist researching whales, I learned much from Ray and was fortunate to have published an entertaining paper jointly with both Ray and Doug Sameoto at BIO Marine Ecology Laboratory on prey densities required by baleen whales. Ray was equally a perfectionist in honing his skills of woodworking and photography, to name a few. I had an opportunity to visit both Ray and Mary at their home which attested to the joint skills of both. My condolences to Mary and family. Originally submitted February 22/24.

Ray was a wonderful friend and colleague for many years at BIO and I always enjoyed interacting with him. He did original and valuable ecological research which had many practical applications. He was missed by many when he left BIO. My condolences to the family.

Ray is a marvelous example of the benefits of cross fertilization between scientific fields.
He made us biologists reconsider depicting trophic transfer in a different way which stimulated a flurry of papers. We found the size spectrum a very appropriate scale for presenting trophic transfer (what eats what) of anthropogenic contaminants, such as organochlorines and methylmercury in the marine food web. Ray was very supportive of younger colleagues in administering the Fisheries Section at Bedford Institute and the St. Georges Bay ecosystem study. He was a very strong-willed and principled man and would only comply if he thought the cause was reasonable and just. I smile as I remember when the Bedford Institute administration decided that they would deal with petty theft by having the commissionaire randomly search departing cars. Well, Ray was having nothing to do with this demeaning process and after a confrontation with an unfortunate commissionaire, parked his car resolutely outside the premises and walked in with his satchel each day rain, sleet or snow.

To Helen, Kate and Robert. Please accept my sincere condolences on your father’s passing. I remember him as a kind, gentle man who prepped my first pair of cross country skis and sold me his Ford Courier truck, in which I had many adventures. Take care. Jim King.
