We are so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He was such an integral part of BRHS, local sports and the town in general. Our daughter Lillian is a great track athlete and in recent years we have had the pleasure of sharing interviews with Bill, chatted with him often (he always wanted to make sure she was receiving the BEST training). She took the most recent BRCS yearbook to him as it was dedicated to Bill. He was a great conversationalist and was always interested in the folks around town :). We were always impressed by his youthful character and need to stay active and healthy by working out at the local gym on a regular basis. There is a machine there that we refer to as "Bill's Machine". He would always ask how my Mum was doing; ironically she passed away on January 30th, only a short time before Mr. Hirtle. I take solace in the thought that they (and many other friends are together). Condolences to yourvwhole Family. Jen (Francis) ,John Ray, Lillian and Clara Lawrence XOXO

To Bill's family, both Dale and I send our deepest sympathy. Bill grew up in Mahone Bay with Dale's Uncle (Clyde Keddy) and was always a friendly face when Dale got connections in Bridgetown. Of course, Karen has always had Bill in her life in school ( he taught me how to be an efficient Sport's Manager for many teams). As adults Bill and Marguerite were always among the good old folks when we came back home to Bridgetown and made us feel welcome.
You are in our thoughts and prayers. We have lost a wonderful friend.

I graduated from Bill's Commercial class in 1967, and started work at Associated Insurance Managers (the insurance for the NS Teachers Union), as Bill had recommended me for the job. More recently, Bill made his annual visit to our farm for his year's supply of cranberries. He always showed genuine interest in whatever we were doing and how everyone was, and, was always the same where ever and whenever we met. My most sincere sympathies for your loss. Bill was a great educator, a wonderful neighbour, and one of the nicest people I ever had the pleasure to know. More than once he provided me with his practical guidance to help me through my school years. And I still have fond memories of all of the noon hour drives to and from BRHS he was nice enough to give me. He put me on track to return to Acadia after a not very successful first year. But more than anything, any trip to Bridgetown that included a chat with Bill made that trip that much more enjoyable. It was always great to see him. His warm personality and wonderful sense of humour will be missed.

We have known Bill since 1959 when he became our teacher at BRHS , then a principal for our children. Later Reg would do engine repairs for Bill , always a great chat when he would call for his needs. The last we talked with him was at Middleton Hospital , he unselfishly asked how we were doing and never complained of his serious issues , we never knew until later. A wise helpful man has left us and has been welcomed Home by the angels. His presence will be sorely missed by all. Our sympathies to his dedicated and loving family.

Words cannot convey how heartbroken we are to hear of Bills passing. To us he is synonymous with Bridgetown.
Marguerite and Bill were the first people to welcome us to Bridgetown, it was our first Saturday in our house and we saw that the Lions were hosting a breakfast, we ended up sitting across from Bill.
I ran into him a few more times in the months that followed and then I tossed my hat into the ring for council. On hearing this, he became my unofficial campaign manager, introducing me to people from one end of town to the other, making me blush when he’d say ‘This is Janice. You have to vote for her!’

My family’s connection with Bill goes back to 1940 my Father and Mother moved to Mahone Bay when Dad became minister of the Baptist Church. Bill was a teenager and member of the Dad’s first youth group. Their friendship lasted throughout the years and was renewed in the fall of 1969 when Dad became minister of the Bridgetown Baptist Church. After returning to Bridgetown after their retirement in Clementsvale, I remember Bill’s frequent visits with Dad as they reminisced about the “good old days” in Mahone Bay. As a member of the high school track and field team in Truro, I remember Bill with Bridgetown’s team attending the regional and provincial track meets. Later I would also have a professional association with Bill as a school administrator. Our family is thankful for Bill’s many expressions of friendship throughout the years. Especially the asparagus!

So sorry to hear of Bill's passing. To Marg and family, my sincere condolences. Bill left a mark on everything he chose to do. He taught me Economics and Business at BRHS and was also the principal when I returned there for an upgrade in 1982-83. I have many memories of all those years including the advice he so freely handed out. Some I heeded, some I didn't...lol RIP Bill, you left a lot of memories for a lot of people.

I am one of many fortunate people to have known Mr. Hirtle. I only knew a small piece, of what was a very full life of a pretty amazing human being. My condolences to the family and community for their loss.

Sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He lived a long, full life. He used to remind Dad each year around Dad's birthday that the two of them were Bridgetown's elder statesmen, with Dad being just six months older. He was my principal for five years, but even thirty years later he would call me by name and ask about both me and my father. He was a fixture in and around the town and school for as long as I can remember.
