Obituary of Irene Margarete Thompson

Please share a memory of Irene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts that the sons of Irene Margarete Thompson (née Knodel), 88, announce her passing at North Queens Nursing Home, Caledonia, NS, on Tuesday, December 11, 2018.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold M. “Tommy” Thompson; infant grandson Jeremy; parents, Gus and Emelia (Eberle) Knodel and brother, Edwin. Left to mourn are her sons and their wives: Jim & Ruth of Stratford ON; Ray & Pat of London ON; Bob & Adele of West Springhill NS and Roger & Karen of McLean SK along with her sister

& brother-in-law, Shirley & Bill Williams of Gillies Bay BC, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Born in Eatonia SK, Mom grew up on a nearby farm at Glidden in a sod house that her father had built. The family moved to Dawson Creek BC during her early teens but she left there in 1951 to follow and marry the “love of my life”

in Brandon MB where he was stationed with the RCAF. Four sons followed as did transfers to Rivers MB, Yorkton SK, Fort Nelson BC, Edmonton AB, North Bay, Trenton and Ottawa ON, Shilo MB, Yellowknife NWT, Victoria and Comox BC. There was a final cross-Canada move to Kingston NS for retirement. Mom worked outside the home as a waitress, clerk and receptionist and inside the home as a Children’s Aid Society foster mother to over 40 infants - her belief that there was no such thing as a bad cup of coffee developed during the baby years. A journal keeper, a gardener and a resilient, self-described “prairie girl,” her favourite colour was sky blue in all its variation and glory. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Annapolis Royal NS. Donations made to

the Canadian Diabetes Association, the NSSPCA, or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family. According to her wishes, she has been cremated; her ashes will be combined with Dad’s and disposed of “in a manner that brings comfort to my family.” We’ve not been willing to entertain what that might be, but now we must. We are thinking that a gathering will be required.

Cottaging, camping and fishing will most likely be

involved…Mom would have liked that. On line condolences may be sent at www.kaulbachfamilyfuneralhome.com
