Please share a memory of Janet to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Rice, Janet Berla

It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Janet Berla Rice (nee Farris), surrounded by family, passed away on December 3, 2018, at the age of 84. Jan, as she was affectionately known by her friends and family - or “Nanny-Jan" to her nine grandchildren and one great grandchild - grew up in Fairhaven, Deer Island. The daughter of  Bertha Calder and Harold W. Farris, a teacher and family businessman, she was raised in  Christian love, and from an early age was deeply rooted in her faith. She graduated from Acadia University with a degree in home-economics, and taught many students the essentials of the art of cooking and caring for a home. Jan took pride in enriching and beautifying her domestic sphere and was the center of all holidays and family celebrations. Her deep and affectionate bond with her husband Jaff, to whom she was married for 62 years, nurtured her growing family and stands as a beacon of love, faith and commitment to others. She was an active member of the Bridgetown Baptist Church and made many dear friends in her community. She especially enjoyed spending time at Lake LaRose in the summers with family and friends, all of whom were perpetually delighted by her presence there. She will be remembered for her bright elegance, her tenderness, her good-humoured intellect, and sunny disposition. Jan is survived by her husband Jaff, her sister Audrey, her children Tom (Debbie), Tim (Zena), Cynthia (Neil) and Jerry (Margo); her grandchildren Chris, Jason (Ashley), Sonya, Bryan, Erika, Caitlin, William, Matthew and Brennan; and her great granddaughter Mila. She was predeceased by her brother Byron (Bud) Farris, her sister-in-law Nancy Diane Rice, and her brother-in-law Charles Thomas. Visitation will be held at the Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Bridgetown on Wednesday December 5th from 7-9 p.m. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Bridgetown Baptist Church on Thursday December 6th at 2:00 p.m.. If desired, donations can be made to the Bridgetown Baptist Church or the Bridgetown Fire Department. On line condolences may be sent to www.kaulbachfamilyfuneralhome.com
