~~HANNAM (née Whiting), DOROTHY CECILIA, 80, of Granville Centre, died peacefully in her sleep in Annapolis Royal Community Health Centre on 20 October. A native of Glace Bay, Cape Breton, she graduated with distinction from Morrison High School in 1954. She attended Mount Allison University, as a Lord Beaverbrook Scholar, graduating cum laude (hons.) in Latin (1957) and Education (1958). She was the first recipient of the Stailing Latin Prize for highest standing in advanced Latin courses at her encaenea in 1957. She taught High School in Sackville, N.B. (1958-60), Middleton, N.S. (1960-66), and Annapolis Royal (1966-72). She encouraged life-long learning in her students, many of whom became enduring friends, and led by her own example of voracious reading and film viewing. She supervised extra-curricular activities everywhere she taught, including drama and debating societies, and three yearbook committees. She was a member of the Nova Scotia provincial marking board in 1965 and ’66. She left teaching in 1972 to raise her son. With her friend Kathy (née Fisher) Nickerson, she travelled extensively in Europe and the United Kingdom during the summers of 1960 and ’63. She travelled widely across Canada and throughout the North Eastern United States in later life. As a member of the United Church of Canada, she was a Sunday school teacher and C.G.I.T leader. She was later confirmed in the Anglican Church, after which she was active as treasurer and envelope secretary of All Saints Church, Granville Centre, member of Granville Vestry, as well a member both of the of Annapolis-Granville Parish Council and Valley Regional Council. She was a member of All Saints guild from 1968 until it was disbanded in 2003. She was active as a Beaver leader, a nursery school teacher, a school volunteer, and a member of the S.P.LA.S.H. Committee, which raised funds to build the public swimming pool in Annapolis Royal. After 1990 she worked as a substitute French teacher and as a museum guide at the O’Dell House museum. She was an active supporter of the Historical Association of Annapolis Royal and the Historic Restoration Enterprises (now Annapolis Heritage Society), and several local churches, as well as a canvasser for several health care research charities. From 1992 to 1995 she cared for her husband, Stewart, in his final illness. She enjoyed handcrafts, including sewing, knitting, and quilting, and was a member of the Granville Centre quilters’ group. She enjoyed cooking for and entertaining family and friends in her home in Granville Centre. She was predeceased by her husband, C.A. Stewart Hannam; her parents, Hoyles and Philomena (née Legere) Whiting; several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is survived by her son, the Rev’d Walter (Sarah Benson) Hannam, Toronto; her brothers, Thomas and Daniel (‘Dut’) (Mary) Whiting, both of Glace Bay; nephews and nieces Hoyles (Bilynda) Whiting, Sheri (Kirk MacLean) Whiting, Corina (John McNeil) Whiting, Daniel (‘Danny’) (Clara Shea) Whiting; great-nephews, Grant and Shawn, and great-niece, Meaghan. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, 24 October at Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Annapolis Royal. Requiem Mass will be offered at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, 25 October, at St Luke’s Church, Annapolis Royal, followed by interment at Wadeville Cemetery, Granville Centre.
