Kaulbach Family Funeral Home Obituary Gates, Lewis Starratt (Louie) 86 of Deep Brook, Annapolis Co. passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 26, 2011, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre with family by his side following a brief illness. Born in Middleton, he was the son of the late Starratt and Hilda (Slack) Gates. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. Upon returning home, he worked for 34 years with the DND Fire Department. He loved the outdoors and worked with his horses for many years. He spent his entire life putting others ahead of himself. He is survived by his wife Phyllis (Rice); son Robert and wife Terri and their children Stephanie and Nathan of Enfield; son Murray and wife Jacqueline and their children Harrison and Owen of Hammonds Plains; sister Irene (Harry "Pete") Banks, Smith's Cove; sister-in-law Annie Gates, Bear River; brother -in-law Harold (Pauline) Rice, Lake LaRose; nephews Richard, Larry, Lynn, Sean, Greg, Jeff and Peter; nieces Cathy, Janine, Suzanne and Lois. He was predeceased by brothers: Tom and Phillip. Louie was very proud of his family. A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of the QEII for their kindness and excellent care. Visitation will be held 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Friday from the Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Annapolis Royal. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday from St. Edwards Anglican Church, Clementsport with Rev. Gordon Neish officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Bear River.
