Obituary of Dennis Robert Scanlan

Dr. Dennis R. Scanlan D.V.M, 74, of Upper Granville passed away peacefully on June 10, 2016. He was born in Louisville, KY, the only son of James and Francis (Clancy) Scanlan. He attended St. Henry High School in Erlanger, KY, and later Ohio State University. Here he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1965.
In 1968 he was married to Sharon Gerber in the Unitarian Universalist Church garden in Alexandria, VA.
Upon immigrating to Nova Scotia in 1971, Dr. Scanlan opened his veterinary practice, the Riverside Animal Hospital, in Upper Granville. For the next 38 years, he fulfilled his life's mission to provide compassionate and affordable care for small animals until his retirement in 2009. He was the coach of Bridgetown Regional High School senior boy's basketball team from 1979-1993 and a mentor to many young men. He played with the Lawrencetown Legends basketball team until he was in his late 50s. He loved his family, caring for and keeping animals, playing and coaching basketball, his community, and the outdoors.
He leaves his beloved wife Sharon and his son Noah and his wife Rachel Edwards, Uncle Kenneth Clancy and family, his three loyal dogs Morey, Jazz, and Heika and three cats Sidney, Rudy, and Elwood.
A celebration of life reception will be held from 1-4 PM on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the Bridgetown Regional High School Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Dr. Scanlan's memory can be made to Misfit Manor Dog Rescue Society, 2576 Hwy 201, RR3 Bridgetown, NS, B0S 1C0, http://www.misfitmanordogrescue.com or a charity of the donor's choice.
