Obituary of Helen Sybront McCarthy

McCarthy, Helen Sybront, 95, passed away at Glasgow Hall, Shannex, Dartmouth on Friday, July 3, 2015. Born in Belleisle, Annapolis Co., she was the daughter of the late George and Leila (Gesner) Reese. Helen taught in the Bay of Fundy schools for 21 years, having been educated at the Bridgetown Academy and a short course at the Nova Scotia Normal College in Truro. She was a member of Hampton United Baptist Church and was very active in Hampton community affairs. She was formerly president of the Home and School Association, president of the New Horizons Group
(The Fundy Dawn Club). She was secretary of Hampton Community Hall, a member of the sewing circle and secretary of Hampton Women’s Missionary Society. Helen was the last surviving member of her immediate family, being predeceased by her sister, Elsie MacDonald of Mt. Denson, and three brothers, Percy, Chester and Arnold, all of the Bridgetown area. By her first marriage to J. Harold McAndrews, she is survived by three daughters, Joyce M. Guest (Les) of Dartmouth, Catherine A. Rafuse (Phillip) of Mississauga, ON and Jeanette L. Powell (Richard) of Dartmouth. By her second marriage to Lester F. McCarthy, she had two sons, Richard (Christine) of Halifax and Stephen (Marlene) of Bridgewater. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. Helen lived in her home in Hampton until 2007 when she went to Grace Haven Residential Care Home in Paradise. Her last year and a half was spent at Glasgow Hall, Parkland at the Lakes, Dartmouth. The family wishes to extend their thanks and appreciation to Donna Hatt, administrator, of Grace Haven and her staff and also to Glasgow Hall staff for the excellent care given to our mother. Special thanks to nurse Kim, and Letitia. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 7th from 7-9 p.m. and funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 8th both at Kaulbach Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bridgetown with Rev. Randy Legassie officiating. A reception will follow at the funeral home. Interment will be in Hampton Cemetery. Family flowers only.
