Obituary of Mary 'Vina' Davina Percy

Percy (James), Mary Davina “Vina” Age 92 of Annapolis Royal, N.S. passed away peacefully on January 19, 2015 at the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, NS surrounded by her loving family. Born on May 16, 1922 in Resolven, South Wales, to the late Arthur and Hannah Marie James. She trained in secretarial services in Plymouth, Devon, where she met her dashing Royal Navy Sailor husband to-be, Herbert Roland (Bill) Percy. She worked in the offices of Courtaulds Textiles for a number of years. In 1952, when Bill transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy, Vina and their three small children immigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia. She worked for a number of years in the offices at DND’s Bedford Magazine, just outside Dartmouth. Later she served as secretary to a number of Navy Chaplains based at HMCS Shearwater. After her husband was transferred to Department of National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, she served as office manager at Family Services Ottawa. In 1972, she and her newly retired husband moved to Granville Ferry, where they ran Moorings Bed and Breakfast for 17 years. During the winter they became snow birds and greatly enjoyed their winter home in Barefoot Bay, Florida. Survived by daughter, Pauline; sons Jon (Millie) and Roger (Mary); grandchildren, Catherine Nicholson (Rodger), Diane Percy- Huygens (Eric), Christina Percy, Leah Wilson (Joey), Jamie Bracegirdle (Wendy) and Matthew Bracegirdle (Laura); and much loved great grandchildren, Ronen, Ember, Maggie, Jasmine, Liam, Olivia and Mateo. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Bill and sister, Anita Wright. At Vina’s request her body has been donated to the Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, to be used by that institution for “the advancement of medical education and research”. The family expresses special thanks to the caring and compassionate doctors and nurses in the Intesive Care Unit at Valley Regional Hospital. A Celebration of Vina’s life will be held at 1pm, Saturday, May 16th at St. Lukes Anglican Church, Annapolis Royal, with Canon Ken Vaughan officiating. Followed by a reception held at Kaulbach Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 190 St. Anthony Street, Annapolis Royal. Donations in Vina’s memory may be directed to Annapolis Regional Art Council, an organization which occupied a special place in Vina and Bill’s Heart.
