McWhinnie, John Cyril "Cy" - 100, Annapolis Royal formerly of Deep Brook and Port Wade, passed away September 30, 2010 in Annapolis Royal Nursing Home. Born in Thorne's cove, he was a son of the late Charles and Carrie (McGrath) McWhinnie. From his mid-teens into his sixties Cyril , or Cy, as he was popularly known, worked as a woodsman, a fisherman, a carpenter and a gardener, he used his knowledge of silviculture into his nineties, but his main interests remained gardening and speaking out on issues of concern to him. He is survived by son, Malcolm (Jeannette), Deep Brook; daughters, Judith Grace (Michael), Fall River; Irene Nickerson (Bert), Wolfville; grand-daughter, Allison Pilgrim, Quebec City; grandsons, Randall pilgrim, Powell River, BC., Darren McWhinnie, Deep Brook; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Marion McWhinnie; Hazel Kindred, both of Port Wade; Vera Casey, Victoria Beach; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Clifford; sister, Ruth (Hartlen); grandsons, Jason Grimes and Dana McWhinnie. Visitation will be held 1:00 pm until service time at 2:00 pm Tuesday, October 5, both from the Port Wade Baptist Church with Rev. Elizabeth Waugh officiating.
