Obituary of William Dexter

Dexter, William Edmund, passed away on April 2, 2013at the age of 91. Born in Carleton Village, he was the son of the late Samuel and Annie (Ward) Dexter. He moved to Hampton, Annapolis County, with his parents and two siblings at the age of five. In 1940, at the age of 18, he and his father both enlisted in the West Nova Scotia Regiment. After training at Aldershot, N.S. and at Joliette, Quebec, he was sent overseas in 1941. After two years service in Great Britain, he went with the Regiment to Sicily and crossed to mainland Italy in September of 1943. He was wounded twice and on a third occasion was knocked out by a shell burst. He then served for a year in the Netherlands and came home in December of 1945and was discharged in January 1946. William is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jeanetta (Hawksworth) Dexter; two sons, Boyd Dexter, Hampton and Cecil (Carol) Dexter of Great Village, Colchester County, brother, Harold of Granville Ferry; sisters, Bonnie (Arthur) Magarvey of Hampton, N.B., Shirley Rafuse of PEI, Violetta Foster of Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents; his only daughter, Irene (Ernest) Sabean; two brothers, Kenneth Dexter and Eugene "Jimmy" (Lillian) Dexter; two sisters, Ardith Young and Eileen (Ernest) Rice. William was a farmer and woodsmen, and loved the outdoors, Walking hunting and music. He will be sadly missed by his four grandchildren and four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews as well as his friends. A graveside service will be held in Hampton Cemetery 11:00am Saturday April 6, 2013, with Pastor Heather Pearle- Gillis officiating. No flowers by request.
