I first met Flora at Paint the Town in August 2023. It was my first venture into the experience and I did not know what to expect. Flora greeted me warmly and with great advice on how to get the most out of the experience. I had the pleasure of seeing her this past August and she was welcoming and joyful. Her life story is an inspiration. I will miss her at the next Paint the Town.

Flora was a force to be reckoned with in a very good way. Vibrant, energetic, quick with wit & retort. Gord & will miss her in our yoga classes & miss seeing her around town. We will definitely miss sharing ideas, thoughts & opinions. She was never short of any of those! I am so grateful (selfishly) that, just before returning to Ontario for the winter this year, I had her all to myself when we went to Frank & Dora’s for, what else, but her hamburger & my grill cheese. Little did I know that it was the last time I would ever have the pleasure of her company. Gone too soon. Forever to be missed. Kathy & Gord Nicholson

Flora was one our closest friends in Granville Ferry.
She was the first person to welcome us to the village.
On her morning winter walks, she would stop by to make sure everything was OK, because our fire had died out and no smoke was exiting our chimney.
That says it all about how she cared.
Great loss. Always remembered. Admired.

Flora was the first person we met in Annapolis Royal; she showed us a few houses in town while we were still undecided as to where in NS we would settle. Her vim, exuberance and quick wit made her a very powerful booster for the town -- if Flora likes it here, it must be a REALLY cool place! (Turns out she didn't oversell it at all.)
For many years we bumped into Flora here and there (how could you not) and it was always a memorable conversation, whether at a get-together, a community event or just meeting in the street. Flora always seemed to throw in a zinger that you'd be chuckling over for days.
A few years ago we talked her into joining a book club we were in, and from then on we were basking in the glow of her lively mind on a regular basis, finally getting to know her as more than just a dearly enjoyed acquaintance. We discovered that to be a friend of Flora's is to be close to a truly amazing and delightful human being -- a unique and incredible individual, and that isn't just empty praise-for-the-dead gum-flapping. You just wanted to spend more and more time with her, because she had an incredible ability to not only share of herself, but also to show a deep and abiding interest in both you and the world at large. She was the hostess with the mostest, she was the houseguest who could never stay late enough to suit you.
On the day before Flora's world came to an effective end, Medea and I were driving to Digby. Just outside Annapolis Royal I noticed a giant spider crawling on Medea's dress. We pulled over and Medea jumped out, doing her Where's The Spider dance at the side of the car. Who should pull up going the other way but Flora. She stops, rolls down the window, and asks Medea if she is okay. Number one, how many people would do that? Number two, you should have heard her delightful cackle when Medea explained the situation. Medea and Flora blew each other kisses, and Flora drove away. Forever.
Life sure ain't fair, cause if it was Flora would still be here. It's terribly small of me, but I can't help in a case like this think of how many people should by rights go before Flora. Obviously you don't get any credit for a giant heart, a winning personality, an amazing intellect, an endless list of good deeds and (dare I say it?) great legs.
Oh, and Flora? I'm really sorry we made you read that stinker of a book last month for book club. I hope you had time to get something good read before everything went dark.

Death lies on her like an untimely frost
Shakespeare had a way with words that always fit the circumstances so well. Who can believe Flora, who was always so full of energy and enthusiasm, has left us?
When Kay Marie and I were thinking of relocating to Annapolis Royal, Janet Lakman connected us to Flora due to our mutual interest in theatre and all things Italian. Before I knew it, we were buying a house in town and I was earmarked for the King’s Theatre Board! She introduced us to everyone and made the transition and new friendships so easy.
Never one to seek attention for her volunteering, she will be amused and probably slightly embarrassed to have an event celebrating her life at King’s. She will be sitting in the great Odean in the sky in seat F4- and God forbid anyone else tries to sit there - to watch the ceremony from above.
Flora was the last person I met for coffee and a chat at Arch & Po before I moved to Ontario this summer. I said to her as we were preparing to leave “my adventure in Annapolis Royal began with Flora and now it ends with Flora”. She replied “That sounds very much like a goodbye. I don’t do goodbyes” and she left.
So, rather than goodbye – Ciao amica mia. Grazie per la tua amicizia. Sogni d’oro.

I hadn’t known Flora that long, but she was the first person that I absolutely knew I wanted to befriend when I came to live in Nova Scotia 3 1/2 years ago. She was classy, kind, and had great taste in art.
She noticed my own art when I invited her to my home for dinner, and encouraged me by inviting me to show at the King’s theatre in November. I am shy and would probably never have dared to approach a venue like that on my own without her invitation, and I am so grateful to her for that, and I’m sorry that she won’t be around to see it come to fruition.
Good friends like that are so hard to find, and I will truly miss her wit, grace, and company.
Deepest condolences to her daughter Andrea and family, as well as to all the people that she touched so deeply in the community and everywhere she went.
So long Flora. See you on the other side, or next time around.

My last conversation with Flora. Flora grabbed my arm gently “Wayne, come here, you just throw paint, but you should see this work”. Flora was referring to the wonderful fibre art works at the opening of Penny Berens and Judith Martin exhibition “In The Middle of the World” curated by Miranda Bouchard at ArtsPlace. Flora was a hard worker, brilliant, witty, opinionated with audacious comments, but always with good humour, a sparkle, and always in a good spirit. Flora was quick with a comment/opinion. and I was always slow with a retort. My response might have been, “ but I always throw it in the right places” , and Flora would have mostly likely replied, “ ya, sure you do”! But, I will never know. A thank you to ARCAC/ArtsPlace for the beautiful eulogy, to Andrea our deepest condolences, and kudos to King’s Theatre for organizing “A Celebration of Life” on October 12. I find it hard to fathom that she is gone.

One could say that Covid brought us here and you, Flora, made us feel that Annapolis Royal could be our new home. You opened the doors of your house to us and made us feel welcome, you helped us look for a house and every time we visited you offered us a smile, a glass of wine and a pleasant conversation. You introduced us to the Spanish Club and
It's going to be very difficult when we go to the King's Theater, Taco Tuesday or Gourmet Feast and you're not there.

It is with shock and sadness that we learned of Flora’s passing. We’ve been friends for over 30 years. We cherished her visits, laughter, quick wit, and beauty. One time she was here while we were having a get-togther and someone was telling her a story and they said “to make a long story short” and Flora replied, “too late”. We will so so miss that spirit. Sending love to Andrea and her family. A dear soul gone far too soon xox

Flora was an absolute rock in our community, volunteering for everything. She was a regular at yoga classes and one thing I could count on was she told you exactly what she thought! She was always ready at any time to offer a glass of wine or cup of tea on her deck, and helpful with advice and kindness when I lost my dad. It is such a shock to lose her so suddenly. Condolences to all her family and friends.

Flora was one of the first people I met when I moved to Annapolis Royal in 1996. I would also meet up with Flora at Frenchies in Digby and we would have a good jabber over the bins of clothes while looking for that one unique piece. We were involved in theatre together where, most recently, she was helping me change my costumes backstage while performing The Odd Couple. Flora would crack jokes at me while I was backstage in my undies. Just before Flora passed, she was flirting with my husband Kent (oh yes, Flora loved to flirt with men and it always made me smile) bragging about how she was 75 years old and in great shape. And she was!!
We are going to miss you profoundly, Flora. We already miss you.
