Obituary of Phyllis Mary Louise Read

Sadly, we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Grammie and Great-Grammie, Phyllis Mary Louise (Wheelhouse) Read of Bear River, Nova Scotia, July 5, 2024 in the Valley Regional Hospital at the age of 95.  Born April 19, 1929, in Bear River East, Nova Scotia. She was a daughter of the late Marshall and Gladys (Purdy) Wheelhouse. 

Phyllis loved and was very proud of all her family.  She will be greatly missed by her children, David (Susan Forsyth), Allan (Susan), Jerry (Wendy), Marilyn (Jimmie Strickland), Kevin (Carrie) and grandchildren Stuart, Neal, Graham, Adam, Kristen, Amanda, Jolene, Kate and Eli; great grandchildren, Adaline, Elliott, Oleander, Kyle, Ruby and Lucy.  She will be missed by her brother James, brother-in-law Roy Ferguson and sister-in-law Myrtle Wheelhouse, extended family and close friends.

She is predeceased by her husband Thelbert (Ted), grandson Brandon, siblings Helen Potter, Purdy, Bliss, Jeannie Ferguson.

Phyllis was proud of her community and volunteered and belonged to many organizations over the years.  She was an active member of the Bear River United Baptist Church, Philathea Class, Bear River Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary (50 years) and Bear River New Horizons. She had many interests and hobbies that included quilting, scrabble (very competitive), reading, sewing and many handicrafts.  She learned to use the computer and enjoyed keeping in touch and learning new things.

The family appreciated and was thankful for the care, compassion and dedication shown to her by nursing staff and doctors of Valley Regional Hospital ICU.
