The first time I met Robert was in an elevator in my condo building in Mississauga. He was a scruffy looking fella with an impish grin and a twinkle in his eyes. Occasionally I would see him outdoors, sitting on a rock and smoking a cigarette. He’d chat with anybody who crossed his path and he’d often crack a joke. I had no idea what his name was and I wasn’t sure he even lived in the building. Years later, I met Marilyn. She and I hit it off right away and we quickly became good friends. From time to time, her hubby came up in conversation and I envisioned her married to a buttoned up corporate type. One day, while across the street at Rockwood Mall, I ran into Marilyn who was sitting in the food court waiting for her hubby. Imagine my surprise when her hubby showed up and, lo and behold, he was the scruffy looking fella from the elevator!
I was sure glad to hear how happy Marilyn and Robert were once they settled into their new home in Annapolis. And I was happy to have the opportunity to visit them a year ago. My friend and I hung out with Marilyn for a week. And Robert graciously cooked us all a fine dinner on our last evening there. Not sure that Robert always remembered our names, but he would refer to us as “the loud one and the quiet one”. After our vacation, we returned home to Mississauga still chuckling about that phrase of Robert’s.
Rest In Peace, Robert, and take care of your beloved Ernie. And my condolences to you, Marilyn, my dear friend. Love, Lynn (the quiet one).

It was a visit to Annapolis to spend time with Marilyn that left me with warm thoughts of Robert. We drove up to their house on Drury, and the moment we stepped out of the car he was thrilled to show us around the outside, with stories of deer and bird friends that came for a visit. It was on this visit where the saying “you never truly know a person” came to mind. In Mississauga it was a brief hello in the elevator, and a quirky comment about my feet, and then he was on his way across the street. Annapolis brought out the best in him. He made us a delicious chicken dinner. As a chef he was accustomed to eating separately. But by the end of the dinner he was sitting on a box, telling stories of his life adventures. He had us hanging on every word, with Marilyn saying “Oh! Robert not that story again ”.
Thanks for the warm welcome Robert. May you rest in peace.

I was sorry to see that Robert had passed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I met Robert shortly after they moved into their house in Annapolis. One day as we passed by , Robert called to my dog, Roxy. At that time Roxy was leery of strangers but she pranced over to Robert very willingly. He was very gentle and kind to Roxy. That day he told me about different pets he had over the years. From that day on, whenever he saw us , he always stopped for a quick chat as he patted Roxy. I had wondered why we hadn’t seen him during our walks lately. I loved seeing his interaction with Roxy. Rest in peace, Robert!

As his health deteriorated over the last 3 decades, Robert could be a complex, difficult man, and a delight the next. You never really knew. BUT, the man I choose to remember was a bit of a nut. Even in his last couple years, he was a creative, gregarious guy who could spin you a tale that would make your sides ache from laughing so hard. There would be a kernel truth to the story, with lots of hilarious, embroidered details to make the stories more interesting for his listeners! His creativity didn’t stop there though. Robert was a terrific cook. As a young man, he learned to cook working in hotel kitchens in Daytona, Florida. Ill health caused him to abandon that profession, but he had an innate talent in the kitchen throughout his life. It was a pleasure to have Robert cook for the family. He could create something delicious combining the darnedest ingredients. He had true talent in that field. He invariably had us asking for seconds or doggy bags to take back to our homes. Rest in peace, Robert.

I didn't even know his last name, but Robert became a friend to the guys at the boatyard in town over the past couple of years. He would walk slowly over to the waterfront first thing in the morning, and sit on a chair next to the slip. There he would smoke a cigarette (just one) and, for half an hour, talk to the men about current events, and past ones too. He was an interesting person, and we were so sorry to hear of his passing.
