Calvin Gillis

Obituary of Calvin Archibald Gillis

Please share a memory of Calvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Calvin Gillis “Cabby”, 78 passed away at Mountain Lea Lodge July 17, 2023, surrounded within a circle of love. He lived most of his life in his beloved home of West Dalhousie and later in Parker’s Cove.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been predeceased by his dad Arthur “Bill” Gillis, mom Marion (Barkhouse), brother Edwin (Joan), and sister Leota (Bert Ramey - MLL).

Calvin and his wife Anna (Guest), married for over 60 years, raised three children Mike (Darlene) Baddeck, Pam (Brian) Sand Lake and Cindy (Wade) Digby. His grandchildren gave him much pleasure over the years: Shaun, Emily, Lucas, Olivia, Carter and Spencer.  His nephews and nieces: Sue, Steve, Debbie, and Malcom.

Calvin provided for his family using the talents that he had. He wielded a power saw, hefted furniture, drove trucks and pounded thousands of nails. He was a self-taught master carpenter who worked hard and played hard.

Calvin loved music and could always be heard whistling or singing while he worked.

Calvin loved the woods. He often rode to the camp either on four-wheeler or snowmobile. He loved cutting wood for the fire, and he loved woodworking. His children were the beneficiaries of his gifted carpentry skills.

Calvin enjoyed camping. His children were blessed with many wonderful adventures and memories of being gathered around the campfire. His family has so many happy memories camping, four-wheeling, and snowmobiling.

He had a dry sense of humour and never took life too seriously. He loved watching TV especially game shows and Blue Jays games.

Never being one much for fanfare, Calvin did not want a funeral service. His family will gather later to celebrate his life and legacy in a place near and dear to his heart.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff at Mountain Lea Lodge who showed great compassion in Calvin’s final days in palliative care. Donations can be made to Mountain Lea Lodge recreation so residents can continue to enjoy the activities as much as dad did.
