Please share a memory of Leota to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

LEOTA RAMEY

Leota Ramey peacefully passed away on January 15, 2023 in the loving presence of her family. She was the only daughter born to Arthur “Bill” and Marion Gillis (Barkhouse) on November 19, 1940.

On November 19 1960, at 20 years of age, she married Bert, her life partner for 62 years and they chose to start a family.

Leota had a strong and loving connection with her family. She was a beloved wife to Bert, doting mother to Steve (Karen) and Sue (Ryan) and adored her grandchildren Cody (Emma), Cailey (Chance), and Ryan (Bry) and, most recently, her great-grandson Max. A caring daughter to her mom and dad; affectionate sister to her two brothers Edwin (Joan) (both deceased) and Calvin (Anna) and also a loving aunt and great aunt, and her nieces and nephews will miss her dearly.

Leota worked from her home in West Dalhousie where she tended the family store. Once the children started school, she began working part-time at Mountain Lea Lodge in Activities. She was then employed at Britex in Centrelea. Her final career move took her to the Royal Bank in Bridgetown where she served many customers and made lots of friends in the 20 years she was employed there.

Leota was an unselfish, unassuming soul, always putting the needs of others first and never wanting to “put anyone out”. She was always quick to “do her bit” whenever needed and was a willing volunteer in her community. Leota was a woman of deep faith and an active member of the West Dalhousie Baptist Church and later the Bridgetown Baptist Church putting her financial skills to work as treasurer and member of the finance committee. She volunteered at the Bridgetown and Area Foodbank. She was a life member of the Bridgetown TOPS group and had great memories of rallies and events over the years.

Leota enjoyed reading, baking, sewing, knitting, cross stitching rug hooking, and quilting. Her family and friends are the lucky recipients of her labours of love -  beautiful quilts, socks, and other treasured handiwork.

Leota adored her cat Murphy who provided great company to her and Bert in their later years.

Bert, Steve, Sue, and families would like to express their appreciation for all the love and support they have received from family and friends for whatever and whenever it was needed. The community has actively demonstrated their love for both Leota and her family. A heartfelt thanks to the dedicated caregivers in the Soldier’s Memorial Palliative Care Unit who treated mom with compassion and dignity during her illness.

A visitation will be held 6-8pm Thursday, with a Service of Remembrance being held 2pm Friday January 20, 2023, both from the Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Bridgetown, with Pastor Herb Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Leota’s memory to the Bridgetown Baptist Church or to Mountain Lea Lodge’s activity program.
