Mel and Mona were the first people I met when moving to Bridgetown, nearly twelve years ago. It was a hot spring day and the dog had both a concerned look on its face and a baby diaper on. It was at that moment that I knew these were my "sort" of people. It even turned out that we had mutual friends here, which she'd made while in England!
Mona was a valued friend and a genuinely good person whom everyone only ever had good things to say about; she always had time for a visit, a chat, a tea and a few good laughs whenever we'd get together, usually to discuss sewing or rug-hooking work. She was kinder to her dogs than I am to most people...which just goes to show how much she loved her pups.
Once the pandemic hit, I didn't get back over to visit her and was just thinking on that the night before I was told the news of her illness and sudden passing. It came as quite a shock, to say the least. I know that I'll always regret not having been more steadfast in keeping in touch, not having one more cup of tea or one more visit with Mona, (which always saw Mel disappear into the garage) but will "pull up my big-girl pants" and cherish the fact that I had the opportunity to get to know her, be her friend and create some pretty good memories to put a smile (and, possibly even a blush) on my face when I think back on them. She was a really good egg.
My (and Patrick's) sincerest condolences to Mel, their family and friends.

Dear Mel & family,
Gord & I are still finding it hard to believe Mona has passed away. So much love of life, such a sense of humour & what an incredibly generous spirit. As CFA’s (from Ontario), we were so grateful for her gracious & welcoming ways. Years before we bought our seasonal home on the shore, while passing through Bridgetown while on holiday, we stopped into Mel’s antique shop. Long story short, I was interested in the walking wheel Mel had outside but Gord was convinced we wouldn’t be able to get it into the car to bring it back to Ontario. Gord & I poked our noses in the shop, Mona was behind the counter & we struck up a conversation. Gord shared his hesitation & Mel shared his conviction it would fit. Gord told Mel, if he could get it into the back of our car without obscuring his safe driving vision, we would buy it. Mel rose to the bait. Between Mona’s friendly “getting to know us” charming, distracting chatting while Mel worked his ingenious ways, we drove away with a walking wheel & our first but thankfully, soon to become many, pleasant times with Mona. Five years later, we bought on the shore & Mona welcomed me, with open arms, to the world of many a Thursday spent hooking, story telling, recipe sharing & good times. A warm, vibrant personality whose kindness, frankness & warmth, we shall forever be grateful crossed our path & we shall not forget. Our condolences to the family of whom I have heard so much of. You were her life & her greatest loves. Kathy & Gord Nicholson

With Mona looking down on us we won our bridge game on Friday. Her and I always enjoyed our bridge games and she will note we did not place last in the league either. Mona will chuckle at that. Will miss not having her as a partner. Also we would exchange books to read. Will miss that as well. I know you are looking down on us and we will try and live up to your example, to enjoy life and be kind to all. Margaret Ann

So sorry to hear of Mona’s passing. She and I worked together as EA’s back in the 90’s. She was so delightful to be around, and such a wonderful person. I was honored to have known her. Having not seen her for years, we recently bumped into each other at an appointment. Had she not been an hour early for her appointment, we would not have connected that day. Some things are just meant to be. Condolences to Mel and her family. She was a treasure!

That laugh, that smile, that no nonsense person that Mona was to me. I was truly blessed to have Mona and Mel as my next door neighbours in Bridgetown. From before I even met her in person, her and Mel were taking care of me by caring for the home that we had purchased. Mona made us muffins and coffee for the big move in day and had the house mopped and ready to go! They both made me feel so welcome. I just have so many fond memories of time spent with them. My sincere condolences to you Mel and all the family.

To Mel and his family,
Carol Ann and I were shocked to hear of Mona's sudden passing. We became friends when we lived in Lower Sackville. We spent many happy hours talking, laughing and enjoying each others' company and the odd ale. Mona was a salt of the earth person, if you met her you liked her and you had a friend. I am sure by now she knows half the souls in Heaven. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Our deepest condolences to Mel and his family.
