Obituary of Andrew Walter Bishop

Please share a memory of Andrew to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Andrew Bishop
1945 – 2017

Where there is life, there is food.
Where there is food, there is a farmer.

Andy was a farmer……
And it is with such profound sadness, yet peaceful resignation that we announce the passing of Andrew (Andy) Bishop aged 72, on May 7th at home with his loving family by his side.
Andy was born to Walter (Bill) and Margaret (Pat) Bishop in Dorset, England. After studying and graduating from the Agricultural College of Kingston Maurward in Dorset, England, Andy went to New Zealand where he worked and trained on sheep, dairy and crop farms. There is still a piece of land named after him there, called “Andy’s Paddock”.
On his return to England he met his wife of 47 years, Pamela.
Following his parents, Andy and Pam immigrated to Canada and settled in Round Hill where they began their life of dairy farming.
Andy was a progressive agricultural business man dedicated to the production of food in a practical yet environmentally sustainable way. The practice of pasture management and forage production earned him many awards throughout his career.
He was a  leader and great supporter of 4-H, Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, soils and crops association, Dairy Farmers of Nova Scotia, and the community of Round Hill, to name a few.
His was an incomplete chapter in his book of life, cut short by the rare disease called progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Andy faced PSP with unfathomable courage. PSP is a cruel insidious disease that robs you of your dignity, imprisons and drowns the mind, slowly destroying the functional brain but not the heart and soul. Andy remained acutely aware of his surroundings and followed with keen interest Bishop Farms, his family and most of all, his grandchildren, Luke, Emma, Matthew, Ryan, Andrew and Olivia. He took great pride in his children’s success within the farming industry, Geoff (Jennifer) and Kate (Allan). Besides his dedicated and loving wife, Pam, his children, and grandchildren, he also leaves behind a brother, Chris (Peggy), a sister, Lucy (Paul) and a sister in-law, Mary Ellen, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-law relatives both here and abroad. He was broken hearted to be predeceased by a son, Jason and a brother, Simon.
Andy’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to those who helped him through this most difficult time in his life, Dr. Buchholz, VON personal careers, the palliative team and all other caregivers.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of the Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Bridgetown. A funeral service will be held 2 pm Tuesday May 16, 2017 in St, Luke Anglican Church, Annapolis Royal, with Rev. Tory Byrne officiating, and Rev. Paul Jennings assisting. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bishops Park, or Annapolis County 4-H. Online condolences may be made at www.kaulbachfamilyfuneralhome.com
