Obituary of Hiltje 'Hilda' Lowe

Please share a memory of Hiltje 'Hilda' to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Lowe, Hiltje (Hilda) - Bridgetown. It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our mother, Hilda on May 25, 2017. Born in Arnhem, Holland on December 14, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Willem van der Werf and Handrika (van der Velde) both from Holland. Hilda could speak four different languages. She worked as an interpreter for the allies during the Liberation of Arnhem. Hilda married her husband of forty- nine years (Lawrence Lowe) in Holland and later came to Canada in 1946 as a war bride. Hilda was a lifelong member of the Bridgetown United Baptist Church and an active member of the woman’s church group. She was very proud of her Dutch heritage and was a member of the war- brides association for many years. Hilda enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, playing cards, knitting and music; especially Andre Rieu. She loved to be outside in the summer and her many trips to the family cottage. Hilda would often inform the family about world events that she had read or heard on CNN. She was a wonderful spouse, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed following all their accomplishments with pride. She is survived by her three children, Marie Gaul, Bridgetown, Robert, Bridgetown, Nancy (Michael) Turner, Bridgetown; grandchildren, Kristel Humphreys, Bridgetown, Kevin Turner, Toronto, Kyle Turner (Craig), Halifax; great grandchildren, Dr. Nicholas Humphreys, Halifax, Rachael Humphreys (Cory), Antigonish, and Athena Denton, Bridgetown; one great great granddaughter, Piper Humphreys. Hilda was predeceased, by her loving husband, Lawrence (Busby) Lowe; her brother, Jope; sister in law, Jopie; and her son-in-law, James Gaul. No visitation by request of the family. Funeral service will be held 2:00pm, Thursday, June 1, 2017, from the Bridgetown Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Wallace officiating. Private family interment will be in Riverside Cemetery. Donations in memory of Hilda may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Canadian Cancer Society. The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Goodine and to the wonderful staff at Mountain Lea Lodge who provided Hilda with Loving care and attention for the short time she was there.
