June Gloria Folks (née Hamilton)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, June Gloria Folks, on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital in Middleton, Nova Scotia at the age of 95.

June was born on October 29, 1930, in Lynn, Massachusetts, to Longley Hamilton and Rosella (Halliday) Hamilton. Her parents brought her home to Hillsburn, Nova Scotia, in the early 1930s, beginning a lifelong connection to the community and the shores she loved.

In 1953, June married Donald Folks of Kingston, Nova Scotia. As Donald served with the RCAF, they travelled together to various postings across Canada before eventually settling in Lower Sackville, where they raised their family. Following Donald’s death in 1986, June returned to Hillsburn in 1996 to care for her parents.

June raised five children who will miss her very much: Kent Folks (Brenda J. Thompson) of Perotte; Dawn Folks (the late Ronald Edmunds) of Port Williams; Edward “Teddy” Folks of Canning; Mary Anne Robinson (Andrew) of Parkers Cove; and Andra Folks (Chris Milk) of Ottawa, Ontario.

She is also survived by her grandchildren Keenan, Devin, Kent, Maura, Ben, Rose, Aubrey, Daniel and Luke; step-granddaughter Gwynneth; and great-grandchildren Elle and Liam.

June was predeceased by her husband, Donald, in 1986, and her son-in-law, Ronald Edmunds, in 2022.

June loved local history and genealogy and could tell stories about Hillsburn through the decades. She was a lifelong member of Hillsburn Baptist Church and had a deep affection for the community where her roots ran so deeply.

If you cannot find any sea glass along the Bay Shore, it is quite possibly because June collected it all. She also loved exploring the local shorelines, collecting driftwood and searching for “mermaids’ tears.”

A Celebration of Life will be held at Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, 190 St. Anthony Street, Annapolis Royal, on Thursday, August 20, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Herb Anderson and Reverend Barry Aitken officiating.

Following the service, light refreshments will be served at Hillsburn Baptist Church, 3686 Shore Road West, Hillsburn.

A special thank you to the staff at Mountain Lea Lodge where June lived for the last few months of her life. Thank you as well to the staff at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital for their gentle care of June.
