Dear Rose and family, I was deeply grieved to learn of the loss of Jon! Jon was a good friend for many years. I had the pleasure of attending many of the legendary Peddie Canada Day pig-roast BBQs in Guelph. Those events were always happy festivities! Here is a photo I took at the 2019 BBQ. It shows Jon in his characteristic merry mood! In Dec. 2017, while I was on sabbatical in New Zealand, I had the pleasure of spending a day with Jennifer and Chris in Eastbourne, across the bay from Wellington. Jon had a jovial manner, combined with a strong work ethic and strongly-held convictions about making the world a better place for all. Jon and I worked alongside on many NDP campaign events, back in the "good old days". ... My deepest condolences to all the family!

I only met you a couple of times but the memories are strong. You gave my son his lovely wife and welcomed him into your family. I know that he and Rose Shian felt very loved by you. I remember watching Saints play rugby with you. You also enjoyed a drop of whisky which pleased my Dad! You will be missed but memories live on. Sleep well ..with my love Mary-Anne x

Oh Jon, I miss our phone chats so much, our chair talks and our deck beverages. It was a pleasure having known you and becoming friends (family). Azar will miss his crib partner and the occasional meat bingo evenings. Logan and Jack loved Rose's chili. Jack always talks about going over to Jon and Rose's to watch their TV. Rest easy my friend, your absents will be felt for a very long time. Until we see you again.. xoxo

Whenever I've been around Bumpy it was always a joy. He was the fun loving goofy Grandad but he was also a sweet caring man that always wanted to check in on you and made sure you are okay.
I'll cherish the memories and happiness I had with him. From our trip across Ontario and Quebec, to him showing me around Guelph for the first time, to sitting down and watching Hockey with him. He was always so proud of us, and I am so proud to have had him as my grandfather. The world will feel different without him and it is painful not having him around; but I will always cherish his kindness, his lessons and my memories with him.
I'm going to miss you dearly Bumpy

I have so many great memories of Jon and thinking of them now, I can't help but smile. Our hiking trips on the Bruce trail, Jon and I band hopping at the Hillside music festival, outings to see an Argos game, family gathering and of course weekends spend at the house in Guelph talking to both Rose and Jon well into the late evening. I will remember his smile, his humour, his kind generous demeanor and of course the stories. Jon never found himself at a loss for words and a good story to share. I will miss him.

Jon was always so accommodating whenever we would visit them. Whether they lived in Fergus or Mount Forest or Guelph or Nova Scotia , he was always ready to take us on an outing. I remember the day trips to the towns and villages around Southern Ontario. It might be to a winery for tastings or a trip to some craft and quilt shops or ferrying us across to the stitch festival in Toronto. He didn’t seem to mind spending a day entertaining us and he made those trips a lot of fun. I have great memories of time spent at the Fergus market or the Guelph farmers market picking up some favourite goodies. I think that one of Jon’s greatest pleasure s was buying the fresh flowers on a Saturday to distribute around the house. Jon was one of the most gentle people I know and he was a gift to us. I hope he knows how much he was appreciated by all of us here that were fortunate enough to have known him. All the best on your next journey, Jon. My condolences to all who will miss him in this life.❤️. Cathie

"In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years."
He definately embodied that, I've met few that were always up for adventure and fun as grandad was. The road trips, the new resteraunts just because we'd never been there before, finding some absolute groaners of a pun and sharing them back and forth.
I still find myself coming across something and thinking how he's gotta hear about this, only to realise.
I think a great many people will remember you for a great long time, for the fun, the friendship, and the good times spent together.
"I'm still alive, but you are dead. I remember you, so you are eternal."

Joe and I got to met Jon when we moved to Cornwallis Park in 2019. He and Joe worked together on the Condo Board, and though the friendship was short in that we've moved back to Guelph, Ontario. He was a good man, and we offer our sincere condolences to you, his family. Ironically, I worked at Hammond's (cafeteria) off the Hanlon in Guelph in 2002. I imagine Jon and his family were already in NS by then.
May his life and the memories you have be a blessing in your own lives. Fronie and Joe

I first met Jon and his wife Rose at Capistrano in Guelph Ontario. Soon we became a group of people who met for coffee on Saturday mornings. Jon was a lovely kind sweet man who loved to tell stories of his past adventures. He loved to laugh and always had a joke to tell. Even when John and his family moved to Nova Scotia he always kept in touch. I was happy to have known him, his wife Rose and grandson Angus. RIP Jon. The world is a sadder place without you in it.

To me he will always be Jammy B, the name I gave him because he always beat me at cards! He loved that nickname. Jon was an incredible person, always full of laughter, stories, facts and so much energy...I remember a road trip in BC where we'd had nearly 8 solid hours in a car. We got to our destination and were all done for, except Jon. He wanted to take me for a beer... Just one said Rose. On ordering, Jon asked the barman what size beers they did, and yes 1 gallon did count as one in Jon's mind!
It is so difficult to put in one paragraph everything he meant to me, and everything we did together. There are so many good times and life enriching times and funny times, that I can and will cherish forever. I will continue to keep his memory alive through sharing his, and our stories. I will miss Jammy B, his quick wit, his love of hockey, CFL and music, his kindness to everyone he met, the way he welcomed me and my daughter into his life and family and his uncanny ability to always beat me at cribbage. Thank you Jon for all the great times, I'm going to seriously miss you. All my love. Chris.

Jon was my brother (Skip) To his older family members. I never knew his name was Jon until grade 5. He was a great brother and my best friend growing up. We shared too many memories to put down here. Whenever I hear "House of the rising sun" l picture him singing his heart out in our kitchen in Port Credit while guzzling a bottle of Mateuse. I feel like a piece of me is gone. Always knew I could call him and just talk.
I do and will always miss him. I am so glad he was my brother. He'll always be in my heart .
Love you Skip

Bumpy was an excellent Grandpa. He was so loved and shared so much love. I always felt he was proud of me and everything I did. With Bumpy I didn’t feel like anything was a burden, I simply could exist as me.
He was always ready for a silly joke, I can still hear the little voice he’d put on before telling an absolute stinker of one. I always wish I could’ve spent more time with him. But I’ll never forget sitting together in the living room, or basement, watching hockey games, while he told me who were good kids. The Maple Leafs jersey will be worn with pride, even when they lose, in honour of him.
Or I’ll think of Bumpy’s tour company, with him driving around talking about history, local gossip, things he likes, family, all of it.
He’s going to be so deeply missed. But I’ll end with some words from Fawn Wood:
“Remember me
When the sun comes up in the morning sky
There I will be”

Jon was a wonderful man and he will be greatly missed. He was patient, kind, intelligent and always funny. I feel blessed to have had him in my life for 40 years. Bumpy was the best grandfather and so proud of his kids. The world will seem a little smaller without him but he will be always remembered with love. All my love to Rose, his NZ family and everyone who is missing him. I hope that there is hockey and wine and giggling in heaven and if not Bumpy will bring it.

When at heart you should be sad,
Pondering the joys we had,
Listen and keep very still.
If the lowing from the hill
Or the toiling of a bell
Do not serve to break the spell,
Listen: you may be allowed
To hear my laughter from a cloud
(Walter Raleigh)
My dad loved poems and I remember he helped me write my grade 4 speech about poetry. I always liked this one, and I will remember him whenever I see a punch buggy, eat kraft dinner or play cribbage. Rest peacefully, dad x
