John Bottomley Obituary

John Bottomley, a citizen and academic from Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, died from pancreatic cancer last Saturday, November 22, 2025 at Valley Hospice in Kentville. At his side, where she had been for over three decades, was his wife and companion Jocelyn Calvert.

They met as young, progressive academics in Vancouver in the early 1980s, in the then-emerging field of distance learning, based on the model of Britain’s Open University. Jocelyn got a University posting at Deakin University in Australia and not long after, John followed her there.

They married and spent a decade commuting to work from the edge of a dry forest, with koalas in the eucalyptus trees and flocks of crimson rosellas and cockatoos and other exotic birds overhead. John was an enthusiastic birdwatcher and epicurean  and Australia was a boon to both.

John and Jocelyn retired from paying work in the mid-2000s and returned to Canada, first to Peterborough, Ontario, then to Nova Scotia. In his adopted hometown of Annapolis Royal, John got involved with the King’s Theatre as a volunteer and patron then served as Chairman of the Board during an important period of transition and growth. He also lead groups on annual bird count expeditions which would culminate in a meal he and Jocelyn would prepare, combining two of his great passions - birding and cooking - into a fun event for all.

John also served as Chair of Annapolis Royal’s Environmental Advisory Committee and led the committee’s landmark reports on sea level rise, flood risk and climate change. “John’s work was instrumental in getting the town to where it needs to be to begin to address the challenges of flood risk in our Town,” wrote Annapolis Royal Mayor Amery Boyer in a social media post. “It just goes to show the power of what a single person can do when confronted with seemingly impossible challenges.” John was recognized for his leadership with a Visionary Award from the inter-governmental Gulf of Maine Council of the Marine Environment.

John played percussion in the community band, sang tenor in a choir and was a member of the popular and mostly-bearded sea-shanty singing group known as the Taproom Growlers. Until just weeks ago, he and Jocelyn regularly attended the many classical music recitals around town.

Far from Nova Scotia’s sea-bound coast, John was born on June 9, 1946 in a village outside the cathedral town of Wells, Somerset, in England to schoolteachers Harold Bottomley and May Whittaker. John grew up as the middle brother between two sisters, the elder Ann and the younger Jill, passing time trainspotting and thinking of the worlds where the tracks led.

Following this spirit, John left home to study Geography at Keele University in the Midlands and then cast his eye further afield, leaving England in the late 1960s to continue his studies on the far side of the Commonwealth in Vancouver. John was awarded a Ph.D. in Social Geography by the University of British Columbia and then devoted his academic career to distance learning and the challenge of extending opportunities for higher education to people in the workforce and in remote communities.

Along the way, John became known at “Johnbo” as his family grew to include stepdaughters Jennifer Benyon and Thea Boyanowsky, sons-in-law Edward Benyon and Sam Anson, grandchildren Charles, Georgia, Victoria and Dmitri and great-grandchildren Lila and Ivo.

Donations in John’s name can be made to King’s Theatre in Annapolis Royal or to Valley Hospice in Kentville. A celebration of John’s life will be held at Arch&Po Bakery in Annapolis Royal on Sunday, December 14, 2025 at 3pm. All are welcome.
