Phyllis Marguerite Sproul
Phyllis was born in Lequille, Annapolis County, at the home of Mary (Coombs)Carr and John Murray Carr on March 14, 1926. She was the youngest sister of Ruth, Alice (Kennedy), Ruby (Balke) and Georgia (Rafuse). The growing years included chores, baby-sitting, helping sisters working as house keepers in the community, assisting with the dietary kitchen at the Digby Hospital, and participating in Girl Guides.
Immediately after leaving Annapolis Royal Academy, she married Elvin Howard Sproul on June 24th 1943. They resided in wartime Dartmouth while Elvin was involved in off-shore rescue patrols. They returned to Litchfield in1945 where Elvin built a new home and they started their family; Keith Elvin, Lorraine Ruth, and Patricia Ann.
The family returned to Lequille to look after her father and the family home. She also became an active member of the Annapolis Royal Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher, Baby Band member, Youth Group Leader, Choir member, church trustee and elder. In the community she was involved in the Apple Blossoms Club, quilting, and Snowmobiling with Elvin.
In 1958 the family moved into a new house Elvin had built. As the nest started to empty, Phyllis wilcomed life-partners for her children; Donna (Keith), Wayne King (Lorraine), and Bert Layton (Patricia). Elvin started the Fundy Sunset Campgrounds in Delaps Cove. While Elvin maintained or improved the grounds, Phyllis took a secretarial and book keeping course to help with running Fundy Sunset and keeping household records. Around this time Phyllis also decided it was time to learn how to drive. Grandchildren also began arriving. Bonnie and Chris, Gerry, David and Brian, Allan, Elizabeth and John.
In 1978, Phyllis lost Elvin to cancer.
Later, she took a course to help with adult literacy. For recreation, she joined a square dancing club. The family grew once more as more partners joined her grandchildern; Martha (Gerry), Karen Fish (Brian), Shelly (Allan), Jason Shurko (Elizabeth), Aiesha (John).
Soon, the great-grandchildren and their partners began arriving. Brooke (Mark Belliveau) and Jared (Maia), Chelsey, Dawson (Carley), Zack (Maia), Ivy; Cordelia; Victoria and Alex; Emily and James; Maria, Emma (Henry) and Joshua. Finally, great 2x Stella and Tilley Belliveau. She was immensely proud of, and willing to share, all the accomplishments of any of her family members with those many people who would enjoy her hospitality.
After 65 years in her home, Phyllis moved to Champlain Place in Annapolis Royal. Finally, for the last 8 months she resided with her daughter Lorraine.
