Obituary of Robert Edward Barr
Robert (Bob) Edward Barr 1937 – 2025
Robert Edward Barr passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, at the age of 88 at Mountain Lea Lodge in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia. He was born in 1937 in Flin Flon, Manitoba.
Bob grew up in Flin Flon, where he developed a lifelong love of sports. He played basketball and worked as a lifeguard, spending countless hours swimming—something he would continue to enjoy well into retirement. Bob married his high school sweetheart, Martha (MacKenzie). Together, they eventually settled in Grimsby, Ontario, where they raised their two beautiful daughters Julie and Alison. As a skilled sheet metal journeyman Bob began teaching shop classes at Winona High School. Over the years, he transitioned from shop teacher to head guidance counsellor — a role that perfectly suited his natural ability to connect with and inspire young people. He coached both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, organized school telethons to support local charities, and remained a dedicated presence in the local schools even after retirement, continuing to supply teach until he was 80.
Bob had a passion for horses and spent many retirement years training them and enjoying time at the track. He was a man of simple joys: family visits to Fort Frances, the “occasional” visit to the casino, crooning along to Dean Martin songs, and savouring a perfect plate of bacon and eggs.
Known for his humour and questionable taste in jokes — which he told with pride — Bob had a singular gift for making those around him feel happy and loved. He had the voice of an angel and a heart to match. His greatest joy in life was his family. He adored his daughters and granddaughter and found deep happiness in time spent with his siblings, nieces, and nephews.
Bob will be remembered for his joyful spirit, positive energy, and the deep love he gave so freely. He was a big kid at heart, a devoted family man, and a friend to many. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, compassion, and unforgettable memories.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Julie (Doug) and Alison; his granddaughter, Jasmine (Jason); his brothers, Joe (Kim) and Eddie (Sara); and his sister, Kathi. He was predeceased by his parents, Earnest and Lillian; his sisters, Joan and Marie; and his brother, Jimmy.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada in his memory.
