Obituary of Donald Lemoine Marshall

Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Donald Lemoine Marshall (Foose), at the age of 77, of Hampton, N.S., on March 12, 2025.

Donald was born the third child of Donald and Marie (nee Hogan), Marshall in Middleton, N.S. He spent his childhood on the Fundy shore, running on rocks, and helping his family farm the land—whether it was cutting hay or bringing in the cows. His deep love for his Hampton roots remained with him throughout his life. At 19, he moved to Halifax to pursue a degree in accounting, where he earned his Chartered Accountant designation and articled with Barrow, Nicoll & Company. It was during his time in Halifax that he met the love of his life, Heather (nee McKinnon), on a blind date. The two quickly fell in love and were married on November 1970. They welcomed their first son Erin in 1973, and later moved to Riverview, N.B. where their second son Luke was born.

After working for two years in Moncton, the family moved to Hantsport, where he embarked on his first entrepreneurial endeavor by becoming the owner of Home Hardware in Wolfville. Don dedicated himself to his work and to his community, becoming an integral part of Hantsport life. He served in various roles, including Treasurer of the Baptist Church, Town Councillor, Deputy Mayor, Board Member of the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre, and as a representative for the Kings County School Board.

Don later expanded his business ventures with dear friend and partner, Bruce Elliot, opening additional Home Hardware locations in Greenwood, Bridgetown, and Middleton. He was well-loved by his customers, always laughing and sharing stories with them during his workdays.

A passionate tennis player and skier, Don found great joy on the courts and slopes, especially at Martock, where he spent time with his family and friends. His love of animals was equally deep, and his pets adored him in return.

Don and Heather shared a love for travel, often venturing to Europe, Bermuda, Australia, and throughout North America with their dear friends Bruce and Jean Elliot, and the Reynolds family. Don had a particular fascination with the history of the places they visited and tried to catch a tennis match wherever they went.

In 2000, Don and Heather returned to Hampton, where Don once again found joy in the land he loved. His fleet of Kubota’s kept his fields plowed and his lawn impeccably manicured. Don also enjoyed working on trails with his 4-wheeler or tractor and frequently took walks with Heather in the woods or along the beach. His community spirit remained strong, and he volunteered as the treasurer for the Hampton Cemetery, as well as helping with the annual Lobster Boil fundraiser on the beach.

One of Don’s greatest passions was delving into his local genealogy, tracing his family tree background. He loved spending time on the beach, searching for vibrant sea glass along the Bay of Fundy, and enjoyed picking mussels and dulse with his sister, Gail, and his wife, Heather.

Nothing brought a bigger smile to Don’s face than when he became a grandfather. First came Mason, then Tyler, and Neveah. He adored spending time with his grandchildren—whether it was taking them for tractor rides, reading bedtime stories, watching their hockey games, or telling them jokes. They brought immense joy to his life, and he cherished every moment with them.

Don will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Heather; his sons, Erin (Chrissy) and Luke (Shelley); his sister, Gail Grover (David); his sister-in-law’s, Mary Ann McKinnon-Boyd (Ken); Dale Janes; his brother-in-law, Rob (Lorna) McKinnon and his grandchildren, Mason, Tyler, and Neveah. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Marshall, Nick, Andy, Joey, Ian, Jody, Becky, Maggie, Sarah, and Megan. He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Marie Marshall, his brother Neil Marshall, and his sister Nellie Jane Marshall.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., and the funeral service will take place on Saturday, March 22, at 2 p.m., with reception to follow, at Kaulbach’s Family Funeral Home, 385 Granville Street, Bridgetown.  The funeral will be live streamed, and available for future viewing on https://kaulbachfamilyfuneralhome.com, under Donald Marshall’s page.

Don’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and his legacy of love, amazing sense of humour, and service to his community will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to call him a friend.

If you wish to make a donation in memory of Don, donations may be made to Soldier’s Memorial Hospital Foundation, The Arthritis Society of N.S., the IWK, the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre, or a charity of your choice.
