Obituary of John Whitman Ruggles
John W. Ruggles of West Dalhousie, Annapolis County, passed away at the age of 71 on March 8, 2025. He was the son of the late Donald and Olive (Barteaux) Ruggles. John worked for many years with Nova Scotia Power. John was a lover of anything outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved to share his hunting stories with anyone who would listen (including complete strangers). John loved going for drives on his side by side, ski doo, and motorcycle, usually joined by close friends or family. John enjoyed spending time at the many camps that he and his brothers, son, and son-in-law had built throughout the years, especially the camp at Five Finger Lake. Anyone who shared his love of hunting was always welcomed at Five Finger Lake by him. If you find a deer stand or blind anywhere near West Dalhousie, there’s a good chance John built it. Recently, John received the best birthday present he could ask for: his best four-legged friend, Henry. Henry joined John everywhere he went, and they both loved going for rides on the side by side together. John always put his family above everything else. He was the first one to call to check on you if you weren’t feeling well. John was always ready to lend a hand to someone who needed it. John was an amazing grandfather to his two grandchildren, always willing to play along with their silly games. He was able to share his love of the outdoors with them while they were growing up, spending many nights at the camp, early mornings in a deer blind, and four-wheeler rides together. John was loved by all who got the chance to meet him. He was known as “Pup” not just by his grandchildren, but all of his friends because he made them feel like they were part of the family. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Marj Ruggles; brother Charles Ruggles; sisters Alice and Donna (Jimmy Milner) Ruggles of West Dalhousie; daughter Heather (Mike) D’Ambrose of West Dalhousie; son Kevin (Melanie) Ruggles of West Dalhousie; grandson Austin (Lexy Cranton); and granddaughter Sierra (Jamie) Ring of Truro, NS. He was predeceased by brother Laurie Ruggles. Following John’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Instead, the family ask that you think of John the next time you are hunting or fishing. On line condolences may be sent to www.kaulbachfamilyfuneralhome.com
