
Obituary of Darren Elliott Porter
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Darren Elliot Porter, who departed this life on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, in the Digby General Hospital with family and friends by his side. Born in Cold Lake, Alberta on September 23, 1961, Darren was the beloved son of Lois Marie (Gillis) Porter and Thomas John Porter of Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia.
Darren attended the Seminary of Christ the King, Mission, British Columbia from 1976 to 1977 in Grade ten. He then went to W.J. Mouat in Abbotsford where he graduated from Grade 12.. Darren then enrolled in UBC before transferring to Acadia University. He graduated from Acadia University with degrees in Physical Education and Education, Darren also carried his master’s degree in education from StFX University. Darren held many positions during his career in education, He was a teacher, vice principal and a principal in Manitoba, as well as the Tri-county Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) in Digby.
Darren was a long-time supporter of the BC Lions and the Vancouver Canucks. He coached the women’s varsity soccer team at Acadia University; he also coached youth soccer in Digby and was the Executor Director of Medicine Hat Soccer Association in Alberta. Being a man of many talents, Darren was a play-by-play hockey broadcaster for the Acadia University Axeman and the Yarmouth Jr. A Mariners. Outside of sports, Darren had a lifelong interest in farming, he enjoyed showing cattle, and in his youth, he attended 4-H clubs. Above all his greatest passion was sitting back and watching thunder and lightning storms with his wife, Diane.
In addition to his parents, Darren is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Diane “Peaches” Lee Porter; devoted daughters, Haley (Kyle) Porter, Katelyn (Cade) Porter and Taylor (Megan) Porter; step-daughter, Jacqueline (Christian) Comeau; step-son, Scott (Miranda) Comeau; sister, Amanda Porter; brother, James (Laura) Porter; grandchildren, Abigail, Charlotte, Anna, Amelia, Austin, Caroline, Penelope, Alistair, Maverick, Lyle, and Alice; father in law, Terry VanTassel; mother in law, Paulette VanTassel; as well as extended family and lifelong friends.
Darren’s Family would like to thank the Alberta and Nova Scotia health care systems, along with family and friends for their support through Darren’s illness.
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am April 22, 2025, from St. Alphonsus Church in Bridgetown, with Father Michael J. Walsh officiating. In Lieu of flowers, donations in Darren’s name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
