Roy grew up in Clementsvale on his family homestead, working with horses in the woods, and picking apples in the valley, as a young boy. He then retired in 1966 and moved back home to his family farm. After his return home, he had various cooking jobs at CFB Cornwallis, CN Railroad, Mersey wood camps, Annapolis Royal Nursing home and was a meat cutter at the Annapolis Co-op.
